Creating a Sustainable Wimbledon-Inspired Living Planting Installation for Styling of The Black Lamb Restaurant

In celebration of a true London summer highlight — the Wimbledon tennis tournament — I was delighted to design and craft a bespoke living floral installation for the front of The Black Lamb restaurant in the heart of Wimbledon Village. Sharing values of seasonality, sustainability, and thoughtful sourcing, every element used in the design was reclaimed, reusable, living, edible, or biodegradable.

Bringing the Countryside to the City — With a Wimbledon Twist

The installation was designed to honour the essence of a flourishing countryside kitchen garden, rooted in the farm-to-fork ethos of the Gladwin Brothers. Sustainable components formed the heart of the piece, from planters built using reclaimed wood, to living herbs, delicate strawberry plants, and textured grasses that bring softness and movement.

Playful nods to Wimbledon were carefully woven throughout. Vintage wooden tennis racquets added a touch of nostalgia and narrative. Where a few still had their original wooden cases, they became sculptural frames that highlighted miniature edible scenes, encouraging curiosity and drawing the eye into the finer details of the installation.

The plants themselves were all grown from seed, propagation or sourced from plant nurseries. They were all living and majority perennial plants so they will be replanted and continue to be pollen sources for insects. Seeds will also be collected at the end of their flowering seaoson.

A Shared Ethos of Seasonality and Storytelling

The Black Lamb’s commitment to seasonal British produce made this collaboration particularly meaningful. Behind every detail was the intention to evoke harmony, story, and a sensory connection with nature. From the tactile textures of herbs to the softened structure of weathered wood, the installation offered a moment of pause — an invitation to reconnect with the quiet beauty of considered, natural, garden inspired design.
